Adoption Report Welcomed by North West Agency

Northwest adoption agency welcomes national report on adoption

A Northwest adoption agency has welcomed a landmark report reviewing the state of adoption services in the UK.

Norman Goodwin, Chief Executive of Adoption Matters Northwest (AMNW) has welcomed The Narey Report, which has received national coverage this week, stating that it is important that outsiders have the opportunity to review the system.

“At AMNW we would welcome the appraisal for a new structure for adoption placements as mentioned in the report as the real cost of an adoption placement that is delayed has a significant impact on these children’s futures.

“By having a more level playing field between Local Authorities (LAs) and Voluntary Adoption Agencies (VAAs) we can help prevent additional delays for placing these children into new families.

“As a voluntary adoption agency we are hugely concerned about the decrease nationally of prospective adopters. We know it’s crucial that prospective adopters are not waiting for their assessments to be taken up so would encourage people to look to a voluntary agency like AMNW for help.

“If the partnership between VAAs and LAs can be improved, the impact on the sector could be massive.”

Leading Government Advisor Martin Narey, who was a former chief executive of Barnardos and head of the Prison Service, was commissioned to write the report which suggests a number of guidelines to help improve adoption placement practices.

The agency has placed 3,500 adoptees – with a high proportion of older, disabled and BME children – in new families across the North West over the last 60 years

Goodwin continues: “As a specialist voluntary adoption agency covering Cheshire, Manchester, Merseyside and Lancashire we agree that we want the bureaucracy needs to be reduced but assessing and preparing adopters for what is an extremely complex and challenging task cannot be rushed.

“We want to meet the needs of children for whom adoption has been agreed as the appropriate route to permanency, achieving this within a timescale which is within the child’s best interest and being able to sustain the adoption successfully for the long term.”

Adoption Matters Northwest is one of only 30 specialist adoption agencies in the UK and has one of the lowest adoption breakdown rates in the country. For other voluntary adoption agencies please contact the CVAA.
